Do you ever find yourself worrying about every little thing you eat? Counting, second-guessing, feeling guilty over a single treat? So many of us have been taught to see food as something to fear, and summer, with all its ice creams, barbecues and holidays, can make that worry feel louder than ever. So I’d love to share my top tips for food freedom, that lovely feeling of being relaxed around food again.
What is food freedom?
Food freedom simply means enjoying food without guilt or anxiety. It’s knowing there are no “good” or “bad” foods, just choices, and trusting yourself to make them without a running commentary in your head. When you have it, food stops taking up so much space in your mind, and you get to be present for the summer you’re actually living.
Years of dieting teach us the opposite, that food is the enemy and one wrong bite ruins everything. But that fear never helped anyone, it just keeps us stuck.
My top tips for feeling relaxed around food
Here are my 5 top tips for you to try this summer 👇
- Drop the “good and bad” labels. An ice cream on the beach isn’t a failure, and a salad isn’t a gold star. When you stop moralising food, you take away its power to make you feel guilty.
- Tune in to real hunger. Before you eat, pause and ask, “Am I actually hungry, or am I bored, tired or just following the crowd?” That one question puts you back in the driving seat.
- Let yourself enjoy the treat. Denying yourself the thing you fancy usually leads to thinking about it all day, then overeating it later. Have the strawberries and cream, savour every mouthful, and move on with your day.
- Remember one meal changes nothing. Your health is built from what you do again and again, not from a barbecue or a holiday buffet. One indulgent day can’t undo weeks of good habits.
- Be kind to yourself. If you eat more than you planned, there’s no wagon to fall off. Just carry on as normal, without a scrap of guilt.
Why summer is the perfect time to practise
Summer is full of food moments, and that’s exactly what makes it such a wonderful time to loosen the grip of worry. Instead of dreading the holiday meals and garden parties, you get to enjoy them. Food freedom means you can have the barbecue with friends and the wine in the sun, feel satisfied, and slip straight back into your normal way of eating afterwards, no punishment required.Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. A quick word of reassurance
If worry around food ever feels overwhelming, or you notice it’s affecting your daily life, please know it’s always okay to reach out to your GP or a professional for support. There’s no shame in it, and you deserve to feel at peace around food.
So this summer, I’d love you to give yourself permission to relax. Enjoy the ice creams, savour the long lunches, and trust yourself. You really can do this.
Frequently asked questions
What does food freedom actually mean?
It means enjoying food without guilt, fear, or endless rules. You trust yourself to make choices that feel right, knowing no single food is off limits, so food takes up far less room in your mind.
How do I stop feeling guilty about eating in summer?
Let go of labelling foods as “good” or “bad”, enjoy your treats fully rather than denying yourself, and remember one meal or one day can’t undo your progress. Be kind to yourself, always.
Can I enjoy treats and still lose weight?
Yes! Balance beats restriction every time. Enjoying your favourites without guilt actually reduces cravings, and it’s far easier to keep up than a rigid diet, which is what leads to lasting results.
How do I stop worrying about what I'm eating?
Start tuning in to genuine hunger, pause before you eat to check in with yourself, and focus on your habits over time rather than any single meal. The worry eases as trust in yourself grows.
