The Secret to Long-Term Weight Loss? Why Maintenance Matters More Than Losing Weight

Losing weight is one thing, but keeping it off is something entirely different.

For many people, the cycle is painfully familiar: lose a few pounds, feel confident, relax the rules, and slowly watch the weight creep back on. Losing weight generally isn’t the issue, it’s maintaining the success afterwards that’s the real struggle.

In this wonderful podcast episode, Don shares his remarkable journey from decades of yo-yo dieting to finally feeling confident that he can maintain his weight loss. His story offers valuable insights for anyone who has ever wondered why diets always seem to fail, and what it really takes to achieve lasting success.

Listen to his full story below

A Lifetime of Dieting

At 63, Don describes himself as an “expert at losing weight.”

From first joining a weight loss group in his twenties, and over the years trying what seems like all the different programmes and plans available, Don spent more than four decades repeatedly losing and regaining the same three stone.

Don realised that weight loss itself wasn’t the difficult part, the real challenge for him was what came afterwards. Every successful diet ended the same way:  a holiday, Christmas, a few treats, then a few extra pounds would creep back on, and eventually he was back where he started.

Don admits he knew exactly what healthy eating looked like. Lack of knowledge was not an issue, his real struggle was psychological.

Why Knowledge Isn't Enough

One of the biggest takeaways from Don’s story is something many people overlook: Knowing what to eat doesn’t automatically change how you behave.

Don had spent years learning about nutrition, ultra-processed foods, glucose spikes, and healthy eating. But despite all that knowledge, old habits kept pulling him back.

When he first discovered Slimpod, he was sceptical. It all sounded too good to be true, but one message in particular caught his attention: “You already know how to lose weight… so why isn’t it happening?”

That question resonated because it addressed the real issue. Not just knowledge, but behaviour.

Small Changes That Happened Naturally

During his first holiday using Slimpod, Don noticed something that surprised him. Instead of having to force himself to eat less, he actually wanted less.

He left food on his plate, stopped snacking, drank less alcohol, and chose fruit because it was what he wanted. Rather than having to rely on willpower, his habits were changing automatically.

When he returned home after ten days away, instead of the weight gain he expected after a holiday, he had actually lost six pounds.

The End of Constant Snacking

The biggest change for Don was what happened in between meals. Previously, he’d snack automatically throughout the day, while making coffee, working from home, or watching television.

Over the following 17 weeks, Don had just one snack between meals. He didn’t do this consciously, he just naturally found himself not wanting to snack anymore, and for him, that became the biggest contributor to his weight loss.

The Power of Feeling in Control

One word appears repeatedly throughout Don’s interview: Control.

For the first time in decades, he feels in charge of his eating rather than constantly battling cravings.

That sense of control has also extended beyond food. He has noticed himself  feeling more productive at work, calmer in daily life, and more confident in his decisions.

Building Habits That Last

Rather than chasing perfection, Don focused on consistency. Every day he continued listening to his pods and wrote his wins every evening. These small habits reinforced positive behaviours without requiring calorie counting or obsessive tracking.

He even threw away his bathroom scales. Instead of letting numbers dictate his mood, he judged success by how he felt, how his clothes fitted, and how naturally healthy eating had become.

Today, Don is wearing trousers two waist sizes smaller than before and feels more confident about maintaining his weight than at any point in his adult life.
