DRINK water to lose weight. That’s what a study carried out at the University of Birmingham appears to show – that drinking up to a pint of water before meals could help obese adults with weight loss. The study will now be followed up with wider research to confirm the theory.
Dr Helen Paretti, one of the study authors said::
“The beauty of these findings is in the simplicity. Just drinking a pint of water three times a day before your main meals may help reduce your weight. It’s something that doesn’t take much work to integrate into our busy everyday lives.”
In another study on whether to drink water to lose weight carried out in 2010, Dr Brenda Davy concluded:
“Over the course of 12 weeks, dieters who drank water before meals, three times per day, lost about 5 pounds more than dieters who did not increase their water intake.”
As I have said before, water plays a huge part in weight loss. Our bodies are 75 per cent water and when we are thirsty our body will send us signals which many people mistake for hunger.
Drink water to lose weight
By drinking water before meals, you may discover that you were actually thirsty instead of hungry, and so you may go on to eat less at the meal. Also your stomach is partially full of low calorie liquid, which should in theory mean that less food is needed to make you feel completely satisfied.
Another factor in all of this is that if you are drinking a pint of water three times a day, you are much less likely to be dehydrated throughout the day. Even mild dehydration can influence mood and the ability to think clearly, so it is bound to affect your general focus and willpower levels.
Whether or not further studies conclusively prove we should drink water to lose weight, this seems like a very good habit to adopt if you are trying to cut down on sugar or to lose weight.
