I DON’T often blow my own horn but I really feel I need to write about something that happened last week which shows just how powerful the unconscious is, how it can work so well for us – and unfortunately work against us, too.
I was asked a few months ago to be on a panel of people speaking about Healthy Living. The others speaking with me were to include a high profile nutritionist and an award-winning journalist. Of course, for me ‘speaking’ is not really anything out of the ordinary because I do that quite often.
However, this was different…because the event was at the House of Commons! My immediate reaction was ‘Oh my goodness how amazing’…but then ‘Oh my God, it’s at the House of Commons’ can I really do this??!! Severe self doubt and anxiety had set in….yes, even me who eats lives and breathes this mind stuff!
Christmas came and went and I had loads of other things to think about but suddenly January was upon us and this event on the 30th was creeping up. Every time I thought about the event I became anxious. I could quite easily have pulled out!
Anyway, having done all my prep I thought the sick feeling in my stomach would subside. But it didn’t. It was time for action because as I well know it’s only the thoughts in our heads that create these feelings in our stomachs and they do their best to hold us back. I also knew that the thought which was triggering the anxiety could be erased. Why had I left it so long???!!!!
It’s funny how you can get so wrapped up in the ‘thought’ that you really can’t see the wood from the trees. There are several techniques we can use from NLP which change the meaning of the feeling, and they work so well even when you use them on yourself.
As you’ll see from the pictures, the event went really well and I was calm, confident and had no hint of anxiety in my voice at all – because the anxiety just wasn’t there any more.
The best thing of all was I did something completely out of my comfort zone and did it well! It’s only one month into the New Year! Bring on the rest of 2014!!
