The Surprising Science Behind Music and Motivation to Move

The best way to move more consistently? Find something you absolutely love.

It sounds simple, but it’s the golden rule when it comes to building habits that actually stick — especially when it comes to exercise. And for many people, music is the magic ingredient that transforms movement from a chore into a joy.

In fact, I recently read a fascinating study that backs this up — music isn’t just a mood booster. It could actually help you move more. So if you’ve been struggling to get into a rhythm with exercise, maybe the answer isn’t more motivation. Maybe it’s… a playlist.

Let’s explore how something so simple could be your next gentle nudge toward a more active life.

The Research: What Science Is Telling Us

A recent review of randomised controlled trials looked at how music impacts physical activity — especially in older adults recovering from cardiac or pulmonary issues. The results were eye-opening. When people walked while listening to music, they tended to walk further. Some added up to 100 metres more during capacity tests.

Now, let’s be clear — this isn’t a massive leap. But in behaviour change, small wins done consistently can lead to big shifts. And that’s something we understand deeply here in Slimpod.

This isn’t about becoming a gym junkie. It’s about discovering the small things that support a healthier, more connected relationship with movement — and music might just be one of them.

Why Music Might Help You Move More

In Slimpod, we often talk about habit loops and environmental cues. Music is a beautiful example of how your environment can support change without you even noticing.

Think about it: music taps into your emotions. It can lift your mood, energise you, ground you, and even soothe your stress. When you pair music with walking, stretching or dancing, it can shift the entire experience. A stroll becomes “me time.” A few minutes of movement becomes a moment of joy.

That’s the sweet spot of behaviour change — when things start to feel effortless. You’re no longer dragging yourself through a to-do list. You’re simply… enjoying yourself.

All Movement Counts

Here’s a powerful truth: all movement is exercise.

A short walk. A slow stretch. A little dance in your kitchen while the kettle boils. It all counts. You don’t need a gym membership. You don’t need perfect form. You just need to move in a way that feels good in your body.

The key is consistency — and consistency only comes when something feels enjoyable. So if music helps you find that feeling, use it. Let it carry you.

And if you’ve never tried Lucy Wyndham-Reed’s workouts on YouTube, they’re a brilliant place to start.

And we’ve got a lovely little challenge running at the moment in the Slimpod Club, all about movement and music. It’s a gentle way to bring in more activity — no pressure, no perfection. Just community, rhythm, and fun. And we are even building a Slimpod Spotify playlist!

A new community challenge is starting soon!

We’ve got something exciting brewing in Slimpod Club — and it’s designed to make movement feel even more joyful.

A brand new community challenge is launching very soon, and this one’s all about rhythm, music, and gentle movement. There’s no pressure, no perfection — just connection, fun, and a little encouragement to move your body in ways that feel good.

If you’ve been feeling a bit stuck or disconnected from exercise, this could be the perfect way to gently reintroduce more movement — with the support of others doing the same.

Coming on the 15th… so keep your eye out for Slimpod’s September Showdown!

The Bottom Line

If you’ve ever felt disconnected from movement, like exercise is just another thing you “should” be doing, maybe this is the invitation to do it differently. To do it your way.

So put on the song that lifts you. Move a little. And just see what happens.

Because if it feels good… you’re far more likely to do it again tomorrow.
