What you drink is more important than you think

WE all love a glass of wine or a beer now and then, don’t we? You’ll be glad to hear that just because you’re losing weight and slimming it doesn’t mean you have to give up drinking. Just be aware that too much alcohol, fizzy drinks, tea or coffee will make it harder for you to lose those pounds and keep them off.

Consider that bottle of WINE on the dinner table: It’s really packed with sugar and toxins, poisonous substances which can be harmful if we over do it and which cause bad hangovers.

Red wine has more toxins than white but beware – white wine contains more sugar than red, up to four tablespoons a bottle. Even dry wines have a high sugar content, although champagne and sweet dessert wines can have as much as half a pound of sugar a litre.

Researchers say a glass of wine a day can help reduce blood clots, is good for hormone levels, can reduce the risk of ovarian cancer and diabetes and boost the body’s defences against ulcers. But like everything in life, moderation is the key.

FIZZY DRINKS aren’t just bad for your teeth they also help pile on the pounds, says the Food Standards Agency. We get more sugar from soft drinks than from any other source, and it has no nutritional value.

A can of Coke contains 35 grams of sugar – the same as a packet of fruit gums, and a 70ml bottle of Ribena contains 70 grams – that’s three tablespoons of sugar.

TEA AND COFFEE contain caffeine, and though it is a stimulating pick-me-up it can have an adverse effect if you drink too much. Apart from making you go to the toilet more often, caffeine puts strain on your adrenal glands and fat-strong hormones are pumped into your body.

If you drink 10 cups of tea or coffee a day it could be adding an inch to your waistline, warns celebrity trainer and nutritionist James Duigan. So what’s good to drink by the gallon? Good old tap WATER.

Your body uses water to regulate body temperature and enable the nutrients you obtain from good food to travel to your organs.
Water also transports oxygen to your cells, removes waste and protects your joints. Not only that, if you steer clear of the fancy bottled stuff it’s free!
